Oakley Jawbreaker Glasses Info
Jawbreaker is Oakley’s name for their new full-frame glasses that hinge at the temples to make lens swapping a flash. It’s an outrageous name for an outlandishly impressive set of spectacles. The jaw technology, btw, is called Switchlock.
The single-lens shield was pretty much pioneered by Oakley in the mid 1980’s. Back then, it was the Factory Pilot, and the light weight, dependable fit, and great coverage made these a winner in the peloton. They’ve been tinkering with the concept ever since that first hit, each iteration offering something new and improved.
This is the first time since the Pilots that they’ve taken a shield lens and encased it in a full frame. They only returned to the design when they realized it could offer somethings that their half-frames couldn’t. Greater field of vision is a big one, the vertical range is 44% wider than standard dual-lens sunglasses. Safety for your lens is another, as the covered lower edge protects the glasses from mishandling and falls. They also worked to ensure that the wider lens didn’t hinder ventilation, so they designed vents on both the top and bottom of the frame, and the shaping of the frame helps force air through, though away from your eyes, even when you’re grinding out a climb at less than 10mph on a day of 90-degree heat and 90 percent humidity. The ear stems are also adjustable in two increments, adding or subtracting 10mm in length, enough to customize fit and avoid helmet strap interference.
As usual, the arms and nosepiece are covered in Unobtanium sticky rubber.
In addition to the shapes, there are also Prizm, Photochromic, Polarized, and then Oakley’s wide range of standard HDO tints. Prizm is a new line of lenses that are designed for a specific sport environment. There are both Road and Trail Prizm lenses. The point of Prizm is to filter colors you’d find in your specific environment to maximize contrast. the road lens makes yellow pop, while the mtb lens amplifies greens and browns. Photochromic allows for 23-69% light transmission. Polarized takes glare off things like water, ice, and glass.
The Oakley Jawbreaker comes with a spare nosepiece, a microfiber cleaning bag, and a Sport Soft Vault case. The lenses are interchangeable.
